Rectangular buildings - 2025-04-01 - TOGoS's Journal

I was going to give a talk about section of Duke Nukem 3D. The part of the game in question did not look anything like Duke Nukem 3D. It felt more like overworld of The Guardian Legend, with a 2D grid of square rooms.

I was feeling good about the presentation I was about to give. It was very interesting and I knew just what I would say. But first I had to sit through somebody else's talk, and just as they finished and it was time for me to give mine, I started to become aware that I was dreaming, which made the whole project feel disappointingly unimportant. So I didn't bother getting up to give the talk, which was just as well because I had also forgotten what it was I was going to say.

A different dream:

I was living in some large complex, the bulk of which was a 2 or 3-story rectangular building, longer in the north-south direction than the east-west, surrounded mostly by woods. My time was mostly spent at the northwest corner, in some conference room that stuck out to the north, there. To the west were some shower rooms and a walkway under a trellis that extended out to the nearest road.

Me and maybe Ed from JHT worked here, and I got on well with several other people who also lived here. Mostly a bunch of nerds doing nerd stuff.

Up a few floors and to the east, i.e. the top floor of the northeast corner of the bulding, was some computer museum. There was lots of wood paneling and chunky CRTs and it looked very 1970s. There might have been an attached movie-viewing room with some documentary playing.

This dream may have morphed into another, and Ed+co became my old coworkers from EarthIT/Earthling. Ally was back to being Justin and not being mad at me, which was nice. I think Davida showed up in there somewhere, too.

Later the complex was replaced by a nuclear power plant, larger and darker (with glowing horizontal lines between sections) but still a big rectangle with similar proportions. Some general was in charge of it. There was a dangerous malfunction. I think the general got things under control, but it was a news story. My dad and I were talking about it over the island in his kitchen.

I think the general was inspired by Admiral Rickover.
