PictureArchiver2 - 2007-09-06 02:16 - Entry 974 - TOGoS's Journal

I spent most of the day working on a reason track called 'moonduck2' and writing PictureArchiver2. PictureArchiver2 does the same job as PictureArchiver - it shows me all my new pictures and lets me easily categorize them by pushing buttons on the keyboard ('a' for 'archive', 'j' for 'junk', 'i' for 'put in incoming') - but also adds some new features (I can rotate and shrink the image from the new app), doesn't stretch the images out of proportion, and runs entirely as a Ruby program using Opera as the UI. I do this by opening an <event-source> to the app which immediately sends me a 'set-session' event, and the session id given I can then use as a parameter when I send a 'keypressed' command (via plain old XMLHttpRequest) back to the app (the 'session' stuff isn't really used in this case - I broadcast the same events to all listening clients except when they first connect and get initialized). The app then controls the display by sending 'set-content' and 'append-element' events.

(In other words, it's a lot simpler than my old program, once you get past the application-browser communication stuff.)

While I was running tonight I thought back to all the places where I've worked on my computer, trying to decide which places were sweet, and which were not so sweet.

PlaceSweetnessNotes
Living roomSweetI played with paint programs and Dungeon Master on the Atari ST! Also played a lot of totally awesome NES games
Computer room IMehI think we had an Atari ST in here for a while, too. We tried to play Chaos Strikes Back on it but that game just crashed all the time.
Farm RoomNot sureIt seemed pretty cool at the time, but that was a long time ago, and I'm not sure how much I'd like working there, now. I seem to remember having at least 3 different machines in there, though maybe not all at the same time. Here I played with Dad's DM mapping program for hours and hours and hours.
Middle of playroom IOKI remember Dad had the IBM machine here for a while while he was writing 'boxes' and a bridge simulator.
Where Mom's computer is nowOKWhere I used Dungeon, and later on where Dad would work on stuff for a while after I had pretty much taken over the 386.
Computer room IISweetWhere we installed FRUA, I think. My mom thought she had 'lost her baby' when I said I'd rather stay at the computer and play with that program than listen to her bedtime stories. My dad told her not to worry about it so much.
Middle of playroom IIOKI remember the computer was here again for a while more when Dad upgraded to a 500MB hard drive. Must've been about 1993 or '94. I spent a lot of that time New Dungeoning
Fizz's living roomSweetThey had an Apple in here and we played Think Quick on it. It was fun.
Neil's basementSweetPlayed Doom, SimCity 2000, Descent, and Doom2 all for the first time here.
Bizz's living roomOKI'd come over here often and we'd ND, or else I'd take over his machine for a few hours to play SimCity 2000 on it (before we upgraded to the 486).
Computer room IIISweetHere I built huge ND dungeons (including the glass maze with Doody and Mim). I made a lot of Doom levels here. And played through Descent. A played a lot of SimCity 2000 after we upgraded to a 486. Fizz spent a lot of time watching me do all these things. :)
Middle of playroom IIOKWe had the computer back here for a while when Shanie moved into the compter room upstairs. Probably 1996.
  • Started recording songs off Z104 (into low-qualiry WAV files)
  • Tried to make Witchaven levels
  • Played with the old microsoft flight simulator
  • Played Stronghold a little bit
Green bedroom (SE corner)SweetI dragged the whole setup back here one night so I could computerize in my own room. Mostly I listened to 80s music all night long while I
  • Played a rediculous amount of Stronghold
  • Made a lot of LW maps
  • Leaned how to program
  • Made Half-Life maps (while listening to Rush and Cheap Trick)
  • Programmed a lot
  • Made the Leetness Maze
I also started making Mulkers here.
314 MorrowSweetHere I played helmsdeep.wad and rediscovered (Z)Doom mapping.
Green bedroom (NE corner)OKWhere I computered during weekends and breaks home from college. Started playing Darwinia, made a neat part of Crapi MAP22, and learned to drink coffee. Also where I redesigned the green bedroom.
110 Brockert (west corner)SweetMade D4, TE3D, and Crapi MAP13.
110 Brockert (east corner)SweetWrote scripts to output Terragen render scripts to make skyboxes for Cube.
Living roomSweetFor a few winters and summers I'd keep my computer in here so that I'd be around everyone else. I started work on D5.2 here, and developed a large portion of Crapi (especially maps 4 and 5). I stopped working here because I was sort of in the way.
My room in 575KewlIt was getting boring towards the end, but my computer in this instance was hooked up to the amp downstairs and I could flip it on with my X10 controllers oh-so-easily. Here I developed D5.2, and played a lot of Unreal Tournament and AoE.
Fizz's room in 575 (final configuration)B)Worked a bit on Crapi MAP25 and discovered 'Drop The Pressure' by Mylo.
Green bedroom (north side)Not so greatAll I remember about this place is working too much on TOGoSNoise-java and getting depressed. And making Narg 24.
Food table at Widen1 WeekI learned about Tapestry, here.
Fizz's room in his parents' houseFunHere we worked on and tested Crapi.
My desk at WidenSuckedGot super depressed. Did a lot of work on non-work-related projects. Also did a lot of boring stuff.
Red bedroomReliefMoved back here in response to not wanting to live in the basement so far from everyone anymore. This is where I am now. I don't generally do anything very exciting here.

I have to be at the dentist this morning at 8:00 for a regular cleaning/check for new cavities. It's going to cost me about 75$.
