Joh was showing us his new digs. Actually he had just appropriated a large space between a couple of dorm rooms and put all his stuff in it. It was surprisingly comfortable.
We had taken a plane to some far-away town. There was this big round tower there and getting into it was part of our mission (that's why we were in the town). It seemed we always went in at night, and it was always very dark inside. Once, after wandering around in the dark through rooms that seemed to reconfigure their connections as soon as they were out of view, I found a small room with a bed and a window. It seemed like I had made important progress by finding this room, so I put down a portal on one of the walls so we could get there easily from our base.
After a few nights of not finding anything interesting from that room, I started exploring from the bottom again. I was walking east, and I walked out of a dark capital-railing-shaped shadow on the floor. The shadow covered everything to the west of it, and it was moving eastward quickly, though not quite as fast as I was walking, so over time I was way ahead of it. While looking at the walls of the tunnel I was in I realized that nothing that was within viewing range moved around--as long as you could see a doorway, it would still be there when you came back to it. And I could see much farther than I could other nights, because it was earlier and the shadow hadn't cought up to me yet. So things moved around less and the maze was much easier. I got the idea to come in earlier, yet, tomorrow, and I might be able to find my way to something more interesting.
Then I had to get up and go to work.
