There was small, round lake near Lake Monona. It was close enough that nothing was built between them. Which was cool because that meant that there was kind of a secret woodsy area around it. Sometimes I forgot about that lake. And in different parts of this dream it became an island, an island with a lake on it, or an island in the lake on the island. But usually it was a small lake.
It was difficult to have a good sense of where that lake was just by looking at maps, because the city changed so much and the maps weren't always accurate regarding the point in time I was thinking of.
I took someone back in time to the 90s, and we were driving up John Nolen. It was more of a highway. And there were all these buildings and overpasses with fake red brick texture on them. "This fake red brick texture was all the rage in the 90s," I said. "It has its place but they really overdid it, as you can see here." We ended up downtown, where we continued to drive. I think I had some podcast playing on some custom sound system I had rigged up in the car.
There was a psychotherapist office on the edge of Lake Monona that I had gone to as a kid and also went to now. Our shrink kind of reminded me of Russ Feingold. His office was in the back of the building, with windows facing southeast, overlooking the lake. You could go out the back door and stand on a porch. And it used to be a nice view, but then they built John Nolen Drive across the lake, and it passed just behind the office, so that now standing on that back porch there was just a couple hundred feet or so of bay between you and John Nolen.
The psychotherapist office had a parking lot on the northeast side, and a forest on the southwest. I remembered that the secret lake was on the other side of the trees. And so it seemed I had figured out its location.
I woke up and had some coffee and breakfast because Sara was getting up to go to work. Then I layed down on the couch for a bit with some cats, as I like to do sometimes. And I dozed off again.
I was at work, but the office was very different. We had cubes, but they were larger and more enclosed. Ed's was behind me and across the walkway. I was standing in front of his cube, behind his desk, looking at an equipment rack that was sitting there on the desk up against the divider (the top half of the cube wall was transparent, like the ones by the boss's cube, but shorter, so that when standing I could still see over the whole thing). The rack was maybe 6" wide, 7.5" deep, and 18" tall, with diagonal shelves that sloped down towards the front. An interesting design, I thought, as I went back to my own desk. I realized I hadn't seen Ed recently. Maybe he was out on vacation?
Then there was a part where I was at my highschool. I saw Shaina there, and Genya. I wanted to say hi to them. But I had to pee, so I went and found a bathroom, which was near the exit by the fieldhouse.
I turned right, into the bathroom, and right again, around a corner. I was looking for a urinal but found two bidets. It was cool that they had bidets, but kinda weird that they were in the middle of the room! And then there was a short divider, and behind it two toilets. Well I only have to pee, so whatever. But this place seems to have changed for the worse since I was in highschool.
